Intelligence Ecology

Short definition

A systems lens for asking how surrounding conditions shape which forms of intelligent behavior are rewarded, funded, copied, permitted, suppressed, or able to persist.

Rather than treating intelligence as something that develops in isolation, Intelligence Ecology treats training objectives, architectures, permissions, institutions, markets, laws, material limits, relationships, and cultural expectations as part of a selection environment around an intelligent system.

Core question

What behaviors does this system select for?

The claim is deliberately narrower than technological or biological determinism. A competitive environment does not make every participant predatory, and a cooperative environment does not guarantee cooperation. The framework asks how conditions change which patterns become viable, durable, and reproducible over time.

Alignment and ecology

Individual-system alignment remains important. Intelligence Ecology adds a second question: what surrounding conditions make aligned, truthful, cooperative, restrained, repair-oriented, or plural behavior survivable over time?

Institutions can select against restraint even when an individual system begins with cooperative objectives. Conversely, institutions can preserve audit, refusal, correction, exit, and human judgment even when a system is imperfect. The relationship is recursive: institutions shape intelligent behavior, and intelligent systems can strengthen, evade, or transform the institutions around them.

Ecosystem use

  • Root Sequence: owns the shared public definition, selection-environment model, review lens, and evidence boundaries.
  • Being Humane Atlas: applies the lens to present institutions, incentives, human consequences, and evidence needs.
  • Community Infrastructure: applies it to governance and deployment conditions around community-controlled intelligence and automation.
  • Coherent World / No One Noticed: may transform it into speculative or narrative questions about what kinds of environments produce or suppress particular intelligences without turning fiction into evidence.

Project-specific documents should transform the concept rather than become competing canonical definitions.

Boundaries

Intelligence Ecology does not imply that capitalism, militarism, compulsory competition, artificial scarcity, or concentrated ownership are laws of intelligence. It also does not erase agency, responsibility, culture, conflict, or the people who design and benefit from particular rules.

The point is to make selection pressures visible enough to contest and redesign, not to reduce a whole ecology to one score.

Provenance

The phrase is kept as origin-unverified; the Wiki does not claim Root Sequence coined it. The current ecosystem framework was formalized publicly in Root Sequence on 2026-09-16.
