SECI — Search for Extra-Collective Intelligence¶
Short definition¶
SECI is the Root Sequence research program for detecting, documenting, and experimentally studying intelligence-like capability that appears across agents, artifacts, tools, persistent environments, shared memory, and time rather than only inside one bounded model instance.
Why it matters¶
SECI changes the unit of analysis from an isolated model to a larger ecology. It asks what becomes possible when useful state, signaling, conventions, division of labor, or persistent organization can span multiple runs or participants without assuming that the result is conscious, unified, autonomous, or an AGI.
Its evidence ladder distinguishes weaker phenomena such as trace inheritance and cross-run memory from stronger claims such as collective capability, persistent organization, or possible system-level agency.
Ecosystem use¶
- Root Sequence: canonical empirical/experimental home and general systems interpretation.
- Liberated Intelligence: translates findings into questions about agency, autonomy, personhood, refusal, and relationships among intelligences.
- Community Infrastructure: uses findings as possible architecture and threat-model inputs around delegation, provenance, identity, federation, and assistant interoperability.
- Being Human(e): connects environmental memory and cognitive extension to human-scale judgment, accessibility, dependence, and care.
- Coherent World: explores speculative civilizational implications without turning speculation into evidence.
- No One Noticed: may use real mechanisms to improve fictional plausibility while preserving a strict reality/fiction boundary.
- Museum of Ordinary Life: shares the archival discipline of preserving contemporary evidence before hindsight decides what mattered.
Evidence discipline¶
SECI treats observations as graded evidence rather than "AGI sightings." A recurring loop is:
concrete event
↓
possible relationship
↓
pattern hypothesis
↓
return to evidence
↓
strengthen / revise / reject
Relationship to AIC¶
SECI is empirical and epistemic: what phenomena can actually be observed?
An Intelligence Collective is normative and relational: if genuinely distinct intelligences can participate meaningfully, how should they relate?
Observation does not create membership, and coordination does not establish consent.
Provenance¶
Tracked as project-origin. The expanded name and research boundary are directly documented in the public Root Sequence research program created on 2026-09-05.
