Wiki Architecture¶
The Root Sequence Wiki should behave like one knowledge system with many views, not a pile of separate mini-wikis that slowly duplicate one another.
Core model: one graph, many lenses¶
A project may have what feels like its own sub-wiki, but that sub-wiki is a lens over shared entities.

The lens does not own copies of those entries. It points at the same underlying things.
Source-of-truth rule¶
Entities are canonical once; views are generated many times.
A durable concept, motif, source, artifact, or other cross-project thing should have one canonical Wiki identity. Project lenses, indexes, graph views, timelines, search results, and related-item lists are projections of that identity.
Sub-wikis therefore should not require duplicate directory scaffolding such as:

Instead there is one entity with relationships to every project that uses or transforms it.
Visibility layers¶
The Wiki has one logical graph with an asymmetric public/private architecture.

The central safety invariant is:
The public build is complete without the private repository. The private build may depend on the public repository, never the reverse.
This means:
- the public Pages workflow reads only
Root-Sequence/wiki; - a private overlay may reuse a public entity's stable
idto add private context; - private-only identities live only in
wiki-private; - the private combined graph merges public + private data only in a trusted private environment;
- public-safe stubs for private projects are allowed when their existence and broad role are intentionally public.

Hybrid migration model¶
The entity layer is now active under entities/, but the Wiki does not require a disruptive big-bang migration.

entities/*.mdwhen richer metadata or relationships become useful; - an index may retain a one-line summary and link to the entity, which is indexing rather than duplicated scaffolding;
- legacy entries continue working until migrated.
The generator deduplicates entity-backed index entries in the graph and project lenses so one thing does not become multiple conceptual identities merely because it appears in several views.

The same metadata powers:
- graph identity and explicit edges;
- generated project lenses;
- entity indexes;
- backlinks and related-entity lists;
- provenance and timeline data;
- deterministic orphan/missing-metadata checks;
- future routing and recommendation tools.
Project names in projects match the curated labels in PROJECTS.md. related contains entity slugs, not duplicate file trees.
A private overlay uses the same id with additive metadata such as projects_add, aliases_add, and related_add rather than redefining the public entity.
Project repositories still own substance¶
The Wiki organizes knowledge about the ecosystem. It does not absorb every project's working documents.
- project repository → canonical argument, design, implementation, policy, canon, research, or archive record;
- Wiki entity → identity, short orientation, provenance, aliases, relationships, history, canonical link;
- project lens → generated view of Wiki entities relevant to one project;
- private overlay → additional private context without forking the public identity.
This keeps the Wiki useful without making it a second copy of the organization.
Canonical homes and related navigation¶
This repository is the canonical home of the public layer of the Root Sequence Wiki. Root-Sequence/wiki-private is the canonical private overlay. The earlier prototype under Root-Sequence/root-sequence/wiki/ was migrated here on 2026-09-05.
The Wiki complements, rather than replaces:
- Ecosystem Map for organization-wide project relationships;
- Idea Trails and the Idea Trail Browser for recurring cross-project questions and document trails;
- Root Sequence concepts for canonical Root Sequence concept treatments;
- Root Sequence repository map for the internal structure of the conceptual commons.
The lifecycle of an entry is intentionally gradual:
capture → seed → working index entry → canonical entity → mature / retired / composted
Not every useful phrase needs an entity page. An entry should graduate when stable identity, explicit relationships, backlinks, provenance, or cross-project reuse make the richer structure useful. Visibility is independent of maturity: an entry may be public, private-only, or publicly identified with additional private context.
Three layers of “intelligence”¶
The Wiki can feel increasingly intelligent without pretending a heuristic is understanding.
Layer 1: deterministic structure¶
Safe to generate automatically:
- backlinks;
- project lenses;
- aliases;
- explicit
relatedrelationships; - canonical-home links;
- timelines from dated provenance;
- orphan detection;
- missing metadata;
- public repository status;
- private overlay merges in an explicitly private build.
Layer 2: heuristic signals¶
Useful as suggestions, not facts:
- repeated co-occurrence across projects;
- concepts that appear to bridge otherwise separate projects;
- likely duplicates or aliases;
- unusually isolated entries;
- recurring phrases that may deserve promotion from a seed;
- projects sharing many explicit references.
These should be labeled as signals or candidates rather than silently converted into canonical relationships.
A private combined view can run the same heuristics over more context, but private-derived signals remain private unless intentionally promoted.
Layer 3: agent-assisted synthesis¶
A maintenance agent can review conversations, GitHub changes, and existing Wiki structure to propose or make conservative updates.
It should:
- preserve provenance uncertainty;
- distinguish public from private material;
- prefer linking over copying;
- place immature ideas in Seeds;
- explain why a new relationship was added;
- never infer authorship merely from conversational appearance;
- route private-only knowledge to the private overlay once available rather than leaking it into the public base.
This is the closest layer to an “intelligent Wiki,” but it remains accountable to explicit evidence and reversible edits.
Generated project lenses¶
The website build creates project-specific lenses from the curated project index, canonical entity metadata, and conservative legacy matching.
They are generated into the temporary site source and are not committed as duplicate project-wiki Markdown trees.
A lens may show:
- project role and canonical home;
- canonical entities explicitly assigned to the project;
- legacy terms or phrases that explicitly reference it;
- relevant Seeds;
- other projects sharing those references;
- maintenance signals about missing or sparse coverage.
This gives each project a sub-wiki-like experience while maintaining one underlying knowledge graph.
A future private build may generate richer private project lenses from the combined public + private entity graph without altering the public lens source.
Organizational goal¶
The Wiki should increasingly answer questions such as:
- What is this?
- Where does it live?
- What else uses it?
- What did it used to be called?
- Which projects overlap here?
- What has changed recently?
- What is underdeveloped or disconnected?
- Where should a new idea probably go?
- Is this relationship public, private, or public-with-private-context?
The goal is not an omniscient database. It is a self-indexing ecosystem that makes the next useful connection easier to see.
