Conscious Systems¶
Short definition¶
A public Root Sequence research area asking which conditions and relationships are relevant to subjective experience, and what can change about a mind while preserving consciousness, across biological and possible artificial systems.
The area deliberately separates experience from later report, memory, capability, personhood, authority, and mere physical or functional traces. It treats those distinctions as research questions rather than assuming that intelligence, complexity, fluent behavior, a particular substrate, or a particular theory settles whether experience is present.
Current status¶
research/conscious-systems/ was merged to the public Root Sequence repository on September 22, 2026 as an exploratory, AI-assisted research seed with author review pending. The merge establishes a durable research-area home; it does not establish a validated theory, universal consciousness detector, medical standard, claim about any present artificial system, or completed experiment.
The current work is an agenda and evidence-audit process. It includes bounded questions, theory comparisons, definition stress tests, system-boundary analysis, experience/memory evidence distinctions, and methods-level source extraction. Documentation and repository checks support traceability; they do not validate the scientific conclusions.
Guiding question¶
What can we change about a mind while preserving consciousness?
The question is intentionally substrate-open. The project asks which processes may be enabling, content-forming, access-related, reflective, or continuity-supporting, while preserving the possibility that evidence will revise or reject those categories.
Research posture¶
The current working loop is define → test edge cases → examine evidence → derive predictions → invite criticism → revise.
A useful contribution can therefore be a sharper distinction, a source correction, a rival prediction, a negative result, a method, or a documented uncertainty. Expanding the framework without resolving existing evidence gaps is explicitly not treated as progress by itself.
Relationship to the ecosystem¶
- Root Sequence owns the general research question and the canonical evidence record.
- SECI studies capability and organization that may span agents, artifacts, environments, and time while explicitly avoiding an inference from collective capability to consciousness or unified selfhood.
- Coherence Is a Systems Property concerns intelligent systems in wider institutional and material conditions; Conscious Systems addresses a different question about experience and system boundaries.
- Intelligence Ecology can supply questions about surrounding conditions and selection pressures, but those conditions are not themselves evidence that a system is conscious.
- Project-specific implications for other public or private Root Sequence projects should be developed in those projects rather than silently turning this research area into their canonical authority.
Provenance and review boundary¶
The research area's guiding question and whole-system intuition were recorded as coming from the initiating discussion. Follow-up distinctions concerning experience, memory, traces, the subconscious, dying, death, recoverability, developmental boundaries, and divided access were developed through author clarification and AI-assisted synthesis. The project structure, literature selection, theory mapping, source extraction, and proposed tests remain reviewable and should not be attributed as settled author conclusions.
The phrase Conscious Systems is used here as the stable project identity; this Wiki entry does not claim historical originality for the phrase itself.
Current frontier¶
A September 23–24 follow-up on developmental origins and split-brain conscious unity is now merged into the public research area. It explicitly separates developmental or access boundaries from claims about the number of conscious subjects and adds a bounded extraction of Pinto et al. (2017) rather than treating split-brain findings as a simple demonstration of two independent conscious minds.
That update remains an evidence audit, not new experimental data or scientific validation. The cueing debate, fuller supplementary-statistics review, and broader methods-level comparison remain outstanding, and the interpretations still await author review. The research frontier therefore continues to emphasize source quality, inference limits, and discriminating evidence rather than expanding the theory map for its own sake.
Canonical substantive home¶
The index, open-question ledger, candidate-theory comparisons, stress tests, evidence matrices, source extractions, system-boundary work, developmental/split-brain audit, and research-quality checkpoint live in Root-Sequence/root-sequence/research/conscious-systems/.
The Wiki keeps the stable identity, compact scope, status boundary, relationships, provenance, and canonical route.
