Coherence Is a Systems Property

Short definition

A public Root Sequence living paper, currently at v0.1-dev, examining what must be considered beyond an individual agent's objective to assess whether a change improves the conditions of a wider system.

Working subtitle: Intelligence, Institutions, and the Conditions They Create.

Current status

The paper began on September 16, 2026 as an AI-assisted research scaffold. Its canonical source was rescued onto the reorganized repository structure and merged to main on September 18, 2026 at research/papers/coherent-systems/.

That merge establishes the durable source location; it does not establish a reviewed release. The manuscript remains v0.1-dev, author review is pending, it is not peer reviewed, no DOI exists, and no reader-facing website publication has been approved.

Scope

The paper develops a bounded argument about how intelligent systems interact with institutions, infrastructure, material environments, affected people, assumptions, authority, consequences, and revision over time.

Its proposed contribution is a review method, not a universal coherence score or a claim to have solved sociotechnical alignment. Whether the method adds useful insight beyond competent existing systems practice remains an open research question.

Relationship to the ecosystem

  • Root Sequence owns the paper and tests, complicates, and revises it.
  • Existing concept pages such as Intelligence Ecology, Intelligence Institutional Ecology, and Legible Systems remain canonical in their own homes; the paper synthesizes rather than replaces them.
  • Universal Coherence Framework owns the detailed model/code it contributes to worked examples; the paper owns the synthesis and does not make UCF mandatory across Root Sequence.
  • Private design or narrative projects may generate questions, but private material and fiction are not evidence for the public paper.

Living-paper boundary

“Living” means substantive revisions remain reviewable, update the claims ledger and changelog, and retain contrary evidence. Git history records revision history; it does not by itself provide scholarly validation.

A reviewed release should identify its approved authors, version, date, and immutable revision. Until that gate is passed, references to the paper should preserve its draft status.

Current review frontier

Substantive author review is currently continuing through the C-003 discussion of coherence, system boundaries, coercion, responsibility, and false coherence. Draft PR Root-Sequence/root-sequence#14 is explicitly provisional and should not be treated as a reviewed release or silently folded into the Wiki as settled claims.

Canonical substantive home

The charter, manuscript, claims ledger, open questions, source map, bibliography, case study, AI-assistance disclosure, and changelog live in Root-Sequence/root-sequence/research/papers/coherent-systems/.

The Wiki keeps the stable artifact identity, aliases, status boundary, relationships, and canonical route.
