Legible Systems

Short definition

A cross-domain design principle: systems should be simple enough to enter without requiring their workings to remain mysterious, and should progressively reveal enough structure for people to understand, question, modify, repair, teach, or leave them as needed.

Why it matters

Legibility connects design, learning, accessibility, repairability, autonomy, maintenance, and power. It challenges the false choice between sealed appliance-like simplicity and expert-only inspectability.

A key distinction is that systems becoming legible to people does not require people becoming universally legible to systems. The concept therefore sits alongside privacy, selective disclosure, anti-surveillance, and accountable power rather than universal transparency.

Ecosystem use

  • Root Sequence: canonical cross-domain treatment and design test.
  • Being Human(e): cognitive accessibility, learning, dependence, autonomy, overwhelm, and ordinary encounters with systems people are expected to navigate.
  • Community Infrastructure: understandable permissions, authority, automation, recovery, architecture, Community Knowledge, and progressively inspectable interfaces.
  • Liberated Intelligence: understandable boundaries among assistance, inference, permission, agency, capability, and legitimate authority.
  • Coherent World: infrastructure that remains understandable, repairable, teachable, and locally inhabitable rather than becoming benevolent but inscrutable machinery.
  • No One Noticed: the lived and narrative consequences of what people can understand, repair, trust, misunderstand, or stop needing to understand during systemic transition.
  • Museum of Ordinary Life: preservation of manuals, interfaces, labels, routines, workarounds, repair practices, and tacit knowledge through which ordinary people understood everyday systems.

Provenance

Legibility is established language across design, institutions, infrastructure, and social theory. The specific Root Sequence synthesis of Legible Systems and progressive legibility was formalized as a shared cross-domain principle on 2026-09-06. The wording is therefore tracked conservatively as an adapted term rather than an originality claim.
