Project Stewardship¶
Short definition¶
A maintenance model for keeping repositories coherent as they change by automating deterministic memory work while surfacing semantic decisions for human review.
Its core boundary is compact: automate memory, not judgment.
Why it matters¶
Cross-project systems accumulate drift when documentation, indexes, links, lifecycle state, generated artifacts, and repository contracts depend on people remembering every follow-up manually. Project Stewardship treats those maintenance obligations as an explicit dependency graph rather than background cognitive debt.
At the same time, it rejects the opposite failure mode: automation silently deciding whether concepts are obsolete, rewriting substantive explanations, merging ambiguous material, or deleting history merely because it looks old.
Ecosystem use¶
- Root Sequence: shared stewardship model for repositories and cross-project maintenance, including deterministic repair, change-impact reporting, and conservative reconciliation.
- Root Sequence Wiki: a direct application of the same principle: generated views and indexes can be maintained automatically while entity meaning, provenance, visibility, promotion, and canonical-home decisions remain semantic judgments.
Operating distinctions¶
The public stewardship model separates:
- deterministic maintenance that can be repaired automatically;
- semantic changes that should be proposed or reviewed;
- age/staleness as a review signal rather than proof of irrelevance;
- explicit lifecycle states before deletion;
- machine-readable maintenance contracts that remain understandable to humans;
- scheduled reconciliation that reports uncertain drift rather than silently resolving it.
This makes project maintenance itself more legible and reduces the amount of organizational state that must live in individual memory.
Related¶
- Synthesis as Infrastructure: stewardship preserves the connective layer between changing source material, documentation, indexes, and project state.
- Legible Systems: maintenance contracts, lifecycle states, dependency maps, and explainable cleanup rules make repositories easier to inspect, hand off, repair, and understand.
Provenance¶
The current Root Sequence formulation was first documented publicly in Root-Sequence/.github/PROJECT_STEWARDSHIP.md on 2026-09-06 local time, followed by shared workflow-template and maintenance-audit work. The broader phrase "project stewardship" is generic enough that no originality claim is made; provenance remains origin-unverified.
Canonical substantive home¶
The organization-level maintenance model lives in Root-Sequence/.github/PROJECT_STEWARDSHIP.md.
The Wiki should retain the stable identity, relationships, provenance, and routing role rather than duplicate the implementation contract or workflow templates.
