Technological Autonomy¶
Short definition¶
A resilience and agency principle: preserve meaningful access to the underlying human capability when a preferred device, account, network, vendor, institution, interface, or skill path is unavailable, unusable, or deliberately refused.
Technological Autonomy does not reject technology or require every interface to have full feature parity. It asks whether a technical layer has quietly become the only practical route to something people should still be able to do, and whether alternate paths actually remove dependencies rather than merely presenting another interface over the same failure point.
Why refusal matters¶
Deliberate refusal can expose the same hidden dependencies as accidental failure. A person declining a smartphone, losing one, being locked out of an account, or encountering a network outage may reach the same practical state. Designing for refusal can therefore improve resilience for everyone.
The deeper distinction is between capability and implementation. A current implementation may be convenient, sophisticated, or dominant without being identical to the underlying human need it serves.
Cognitive resilience¶
Technical redundancy is incomplete when nobody retains enough functional understanding to use another path. Technological Autonomy therefore intersects with cognitive redundancy, repair knowledge, troubleshooting, method diversity, documented succession, and the ability to translate between different workflows.
Ecosystem role¶
- Root Sequence: owns the broad systems treatment within resilience and graceful degradation.
- Being Human(e): connects technological refusal and dependence to access, agency, dignity, and ordinary human variation.
- Community Infrastructure: is a concrete proving ground for multi-path access, degraded operation, and human failover without making one platform the owner of community capability.
Private project-specific implementations, worldbuilding, and narrative treatments belong in the private overlay rather than being copied into this public identity.
Provenance¶
Technological autonomy is established language beyond Root Sequence, so the Wiki makes no originality claim. The specific ecosystem synthesis tying deliberate refusal, resilience, multi-path access, cognitive redundancy, and underlying human capability together was formalized in Root Sequence on 2026-09-08.
Canonical substantive home¶
The public systems treatment lives in Root-Sequence/root-sequence/systems/resilience-and-graceful-degradation.md. The Wiki keeps the stable identity and cross-project routing.
