Root Sequence¶
Short definition¶
The name of the wider project ecosystem and its central conceptual commons. A root is an underlying condition or relationship from which outcomes can grow; a sequence is how conditions unfold through time, feedback, choice, adaptation, and consequence.
Together, the name asks: What conditions made this possible, and what does it make possible next?
Why it matters¶
The pairing keeps two directions of inquiry connected. Looking only for roots can turn complexity into a single-origin story. Following only a sequence can describe events without examining the structures, histories, dependencies, or power relationships that shaped them.
Sequences can also become roots: an outcome becomes part of the conditions for whatever follows. The name therefore signals recursive inquiry, not a fixed causal chain or predetermined future.
Ecosystem use¶
- Root Sequence: the organization-wide ecosystem of related research, practice, infrastructure, speculative, narrative, and reference projects.
Root-Sequence/root-sequence: the public conceptual commons, broadest research entry point, and developing routing/synthesis layer—not the whole ecosystem and not a replacement discipline.- Root Sequence Wiki: the shared terminology, provenance, relationship, and navigation layer.
The stylings [root]sequence and root://sequence refer to the same name. They do not identify separate projects or technical protocols.
Boundaries¶
The name does not assert that every system has one deepest root, one universal sequence, or one master framework. It does not require every project to adopt the early Liberation Cycle or ecological project-cycle metaphor.
Those founding formulations remain historically relevant, but current usage is broader: tracing underlying conditions, unfolding processes, consequences, recursion, and possible alternatives across distinct domains.
September 24 related-work review and editorial method pilots sharpened a further boundary: cross-domain synthesis should route questions toward established fields and methods rather than silently replacing them. The public source summarizes this as more routing and less totalization. The pilot evidence is narrow and editorial, so it supports a project-method boundary rather than validating Root Sequence itself as a general research method.
Provenance¶
Early public Root Sequence materials use the name alongside the Liberation Cycle and the Roots → Signals → Growth → Fruits → Compost → Roots metaphor. The exact first-known naming record has not yet been verified, so the Wiki records the term conservatively as project-origin with medium confidence.
